Amphibians and Reptiles in Viikki
Seven species of
amphibians and reptiles inhabit Vanhankaupunginlahti bay
wetlands. However, amphibians have clearly diminished in numbers.
In addition to the common frog and the common toad that can be
found at present, huge marsh frogs used to inhabit Vanhankaupunginlahti bay. These large and loudly croaking frogs
were common in the 1930s-1940s but then the population
decreased. The last record of a marsh frog dates back to 1960.
It is quite likely that the marsh frog was originally
introduced, not naturally inhabiting the area.
On worm summer days at
Vanhankaupunginlahti bay, viviparous lizards can be seen
enjoying the sun on rocks and wooden dock boards by the reed
bed. In freshwater ponds and drains, a keen observer may get a
glimpse of a newt, the only species of salamanders that inhabit
Viikki area. Both of these species are protected by law, as are
all the amphibians and reptiles in Finland, and should not be
disturbed in any way.
