The Plentiful Bird Life at Viikki Area
Viikki-Vanhankaupunginlahti bay area is
diverse in habitats and, thus, an excellent place for bird
watching. In spring and in autumn, hundreds of thousands of
migrating birds stop here for a while. The wetlands and meadows
in Viikki-Vanhankaupunginlahti
bay area are of national
importance to many waterfowl, waders and species preferring open
fields. Furthermore, the vast reed bed and shore meadows host a
variety of nesting passerine species, some of which are quite
rare in Finland.
Although spring is the classic time for
bird watching, autumn is also becoming popular. One reason is
that the grey heron is now spreading in Finland. At best, over
thirty individuals have been observed at Viikki. Towards the end
of summer, reed bed hides many of the birds, but the bird
observation towers make it possible to spot the migratory birds
preparing for their journey.
